Grouse Hunting in Finnmark – Two Hours from the Nearest Road

Grouse Hunting in Finnmark – Two Hours from the Nearest Road

Finnmark still has grouse. You just have to go far enough in.

While hunting pressure increases along the roads, the innermost parts of the plateau remain untouched. Here we set up camp – right in the terrain, with birds around the tent.

No driving every morning. No fighting for the best areas. You wake up, release the dog, and hunt.

Why This Works

The Problem with Grouse Hunting Today

You know the situation: Long drives to the hunting grounds. Parking lots full of cars. The same areas walked over by 20 other hunters before lunch.

Finnmark still has birds, but they're not along the E6.

Our solution is simple:

We drive you two hours into the plateau with a 6x6 and set up a complete camp. You stay there for 4-7 days and hunt right from the tent.

That means:

  • First hunter in the terrain every morning – because you're already there
  • New areas every day without moving camp
  • Your dog gets to work properly in undisturbed terrain

The Terrain

Kautokeino Plateau – Why Exactly Here?

Inner Finnmark has lower hunting pressure than the coast and Troms. The terrain is open and provides good visibility – perfect for bird dogs. And most importantly: the populations here have been stable in recent years.

Population Data

NINA's census data shows annual status. We follow this and only recommend hunting when conditions are right.

The terrain suits:

  • Bird dogs that need space to work
  • Hunters who want to walk – typically 10-20 km per day
  • Those who appreciate silence and open views
“

We've hunted grouse for 15 years in different places in Norway. The Kautokeino plateau is the only place where my dog gets to work undisturbed hour after hour. No other hunters, no ATVs, just open wilderness.

The Camp Setup

Everything You Need – Nothing You Don't

We set up a complete hunting camp that's ready when you arrive:

Standard setup:

  • Lavvo or tent with space for 2-4 hunters
  • Camp beds, chairs, table
  • Wood stove with dry firewood (we refill during the stay)
  • Gas stove for cooking
  • Dog crate and water containers
  • Sauna (yes, in the middle of the plateau)

Weight limit: 50 kg of gear per person – we need to transport everything in by 6x6 the same day.

Have your own gear? Great. Bring what you want, and we'll adjust the price.

Special requests? We've set up camps for everything from solo hunters to groups of 6. Just tell us what you need.

How the Trip Works

Day 1:

You meet us in Kautokeino. We load the 6x6 and drive into the plateau – about 2 hours. The camp is set up, and you can hunt the same afternoon if you want.

Days 2-6:

You hunt from camp. We have staff available who can:

  • Refill firewood and supplies
  • Pick you up if something happens
  • Make a supply run if needed

Last day:

We pick you up and the gear. Simple checkout.

Alternative: Stay at Norvilt Lodge

Prefer a shower and bed every night? We offer daily transport from the lodge in Kautokeino to the hunting areas. Suitable for those who want comfort, or have physical limitations that make camping difficult.

Sami reindeer herder and lead guide

Growing up as a reindeer herder, hunting and fishing have been part of my life since I was a child — not a hobby, but a way of living. I grew up in Kautokeino, and the plateau has always been my map. Few know the Finnmark plateau the way a reindeer herder does: the seasons, the terrain, the wildlife, the waters. That is the knowledge I bring to every trip with my guests.
